Turning Point
In Native Hawaiian, the word “huliau” means a turning point, a time of change. The root word “huli” is the shoot of the taro plant, the staple of the Native Hawaiian diet, which was replanted after the “kalo,” the edible corm, was gathered and consumed. Huli would be replanted again and again, continually regenerating the productive capacity of the “loʻi,” or taro patch.
Hawaii’s economy is on the verge of a momentous turning point driven by generational demographic shifts. As Hawaii’s population ages, there will be a massive transfer of ownership and leadership of small and medium-sized businesses, which make up the foundation of the state’s economy. These demographic trends will require a regeneration of the productive capacity of Hawaii’s small business sector.
